30 Underrated Comedy Movies You Probably Missed
Every comedy fan has a movie they’ll defend like family — the one that bombed, got buried by a bad release date, or just never found its audience. Mine is The Nice Guys, a film I saw in a half-empty theater in 2016 and have been evangelizing about ever since. This list is my attempt to fix the historical record: 30 underrated comedy movies that deserved better, all of them genuinely funny, none of them requiring homework.
I’ve excluded cult films everyone already knows and “underrated” classics that won Oscars. These are the real sleepers — movies that underperformed, got dumped on streaming, or were simply released at the wrong moment. Every one of them is worth your evening.

Why great comedies get missed
Comedy is the genre most punished by bad timing. A drama can find its audience over years; a comedy that misses its opening weekend gets labeled a flop and disappears. Marketing departments also consistently fail comedies — they sell the premise instead of the jokes, and premises sound dumb on posters. Popstar looked like a vanity project in trailers; it’s actually the sharpest music-industry satire since Spinal Tap.
The good news: streaming gave every one of these films a second life. The bad news: they’re buried under algorithmic recommendations for things you already watched. Consider this list your human-curated override. And if you want to appreciate what these films do right, my breakdown of how comedians actually build a joke will show you the craft hiding inside the chaos.
The 30 most underrated comedy movies
1. The Nice Guys (2016). Shane Black’s ’70s detective comedy made a tenth of what it deserved. Ryan Gosling’s pratfall genius and Russell Crowe’s bruiser charm deserved a franchise. Start here.
2. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016). The Lonely Island’s pop-star mockumentary opened against Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and vanished. The songs are genuinely great, which makes the satire lethal.
3. Game Night (2018). Marketed as a generic couples comedy, it’s actually a brilliantly constructed action-comedy with the decade’s best one-take gag. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams are perfect.
4. Hot Rod (2007). Andy Samberg’s stuntman comedy bombed theatrically and became a dorm-room legend. The “cool beans” dance and the forest fight are pure anti-comedy joy.
5. MacGruber (2010). An SNL sketch stretched to 90 minutes shouldn’t work; instead it’s one of the filthiest, funniest action parodies ever. The throat-rip gag is iconic.
6. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007). Crushed between Juno and awards season, this music-biopic parody predicted every cliché the genre still uses. John C. Reilly is magnificent.
7. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). Shane Black’s other masterpiece — Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer’s noir comedy revived both their careers and nobody saw it. The narration alone is worth the price.
8. The Other Guys (2010). Overshadowed by The Hangover era, Adam McKay’s cop comedy is his tightest film. Mark Wahlberg’s fury at Will Ferrell’s earnestness never gets old.

9. Role Models (2008). Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott mentoring kids as community service. The KISS-obsessed kid and the medieval battle finale are inspired. Rudd’s best leading performance.
10. I Love You, Man (2009). The rare comedy about male friendship played straight. Jason Segel’s Sydney is the ideal best friend, and the Rush worship is deeply felt.
11. Cedar Rapids (2011). Ed Helms’s sheltered insurance agent at a convention in Iowa. John C. Reilly and Anne Heche steal scenes in this gentle, big-hearted comedy.
12. Our Idiot Brother (2011). Paul Rudd as a lovable man-child who ruins everyone’s life by being too honest. Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, and Emily Mortimer are all great around him.
13. The Way Way Back (2013). A coming-of-age comedy set at a water park, with Sam Rockwell’s man-child mentor at its center. The “3” passing gag and the dance finale are perfect.
14. Safety Not Guaranteed (2012). A tiny indie about time-travel classified ads that’s secretly a romance. Aubrey Plaza and Mark Duplass have strange, wonderful chemistry.
15. What We Do in the Shadows (2014). It found its audience eventually, but the film still underperformed theatrically. Vampire flatmates, immortal boredom, endless comedy. The “we’re vampires, we don’t sparkle” line says it all.
16. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016). Taika Waititi’s New Zealand foster-kid adventure. Sam Neill’s gruff uncle and Julian Dennison’s rhyming delinquent are an all-time odd couple.

17. The World’s End (2013). The Cornetto trilogy’s finale got lost between bigger releases. Pegg and Frost’s pub-crawl apocalypse is the trilogy’s most emotional entry — and the fight choreography is superb.
18. Paul (2011). Pegg and Frost’s alien road comedy was dismissed as Superbad with an alien. It’s warmer and smarter than that, with Seth Rogen’s Paul as a genuinely lovable creation.
19. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010). Edgar Wright’s video-game romance bombed and became a generation’s favorite. The editing and sound design remain unmatched — every frame is a joke.
20. The Five-Year Engagement (2012). Jason Segel and Emily Blunt’s long-engagement comedy was sold as a rom-com and plays as something sadder and funnier. The Elmo-voice scene is legendary.
21. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008). It did okay, but never got its due as the decade’s best breakup comedy. Segel’s Dracula musical and the naked-opening honesty set it apart.
22. Tag (2018). Based on a true story about friends playing tag for 30 years. Jeremy Renner’s never-been-tagged paranoia and the slow-mo action sequences are inspired.
23. Blockers (2018). Marketed as raunchy, it’s actually a sweet, sex-positive teen comedy with great parents. John Cena’s butt-chugging scene aside, the heart is real.
24. Instant Family (2018). Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne fostering three kids. Funnier than it has any right to be, and the emotional payoff is earned, not manufactured.

25. The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018). Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon’s accidental-spy comedy has genuinely great action and McKinnon’s most unhinged performance. The trapeze sequence is a highlight.
26. Long Shot (2019). Seth Rogen romances Charlize Theron’s Secretary of State. The Molly-trip negotiation scene is the funniest political set piece in years. Criminally underseen.
27. The Art of Self-Defense (2019). Jesse Eisenberg joins a sinister karate dojo in this deadpan satire of toxic masculinity. It’s Fight Club played as awkward comedy.
28. Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019). Jillian Bell’s inspirational comedy earns every beat. The running-group dynamics are hilarious, and Bell’s performance is a revelation.
29. The Personal History of David Copperfield (2020). Armando Iannucci’s Dickens adaptation got buried by the pandemic. Dev Patel leads a colorblind cast through the funniest period comedy in years.
30. Thelma (2024). A 94-year-old action hero on a mobility scooter. June Squibb’s scam-revenge comedy is the sweetest surprise of recent years — and almost nobody saw it theatrically.
Where to find hidden gems
My method: follow filmmakers, not algorithms. If you loved The Nice Guys, watch everything Shane Black wrote. If Popstar clicked, the Lonely Island’s whole catalog awaits. Directors and writers are the most reliable recommendation engines — their sensibilities travel.
Also: check the “because you watched” graveyard. Streaming services bury mid-budget comedies after two weeks, but they’re all still there, waiting. For the canonized classics these films belong alongside, see my ranked list of the best comedy movies ever made — and note how many of the greats started as improv comedy and where it shows up on screen before they were scripts.
The one that got away — my personal pick
If I have to name one: The Nice Guys. I saw it opening weekend in a theater with maybe twelve people, and I walked out furious — not at the film, which is perfect, but at the universe for ignoring it. Gosling’s scream when he finds the body, Crowe’s deadpan hitman with a code, the ’70s LA smog practically a character. Every few months I convince someone to watch it, and every few months someone texts me at midnight: “HOW DID I MISS THIS.” That’s the whole list, really — thirty films waiting for their midnight text.
Frequently asked questions
The Nice Guys (2016) is my pick — a perfect detective comedy that made a fraction of what it deserved and has grown in reputation every year since. Popstar (2016) and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) are close behind.
Bad timing, bad marketing, and bad luck. Comedies are hard to sell in trailers — premises sound dumb without the execution — and a crowded release date can bury a great film permanently. Streaming has given many flops a second life.
Most of this list rotates across Netflix, Hulu, Max, and Paramount+. The Nice Guys, Game Night, Popstar, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople are frequently available — check a streaming aggregator for current locations.
Game Night for couples, Tag for groups, The Nice Guys for film buffs, and Instant Family for families. All four play great cold — no prior knowledge needed.
Yes — Thelma (2024), Long Shot (2019), and The Personal History of David Copperfield (2020) all deserved bigger audiences. Hit Man (2024) found its people on Netflix after a tiny theatrical run.
