12 Best Honeymoon Destinations in December (Winter Sun & Snow)

Couple in overwater bungalow in Maldives at sunset December

A December honeymoon is secretly the best-timed honeymoon — you just have to pick the right version. There are three perfect Decembers: the winter-sun escape (Caribbean, Maldives, Southeast Asia), the winter-wonderland romance (Alps, Iceland, Kyoto in snow), and the Christmas-market magic (Europe’s old towns dressed for the season). The only wrong choice is a December honeymoon with no plan — because ‘December’ means opposite things in opposite hemispheres.

My husband and I did the winter-sun version (Belize), and friends have done the other two — I’ve collected their intel along with my own research. Here are the twelve December honeymoons I’d actually recommend, with honest costs.

For year-round ideas, see our best honeymoon destinations. For budget-specific picks, there’s our budget honeymoon guide.

Winter Sun: The Classic December Escape

Maldives ($4,000–7,000/week): December is peak season — perfect weather (28°C, calm seas), and peak prices. The overwater bungalow is the dream, and December delivers it flawlessly. Book 6+ months ahead; the best resorts sell out. The splurge is the point here — if you’re doing the Maldives, do it right.

Caribbean: St. Lucia + Barbados ($2,500–4,000): the sweet spot of winter sun — 27°C, dry season, and direct flights from the US East Coast. St. Lucia’s Pitons and rainforest plus a beach resort; Barbados’s food scene (the best in the Caribbean) and pink-sand beaches. Early December (before the 20th) is significantly cheaper than Christmas week.

Belize ($2,000–3,000): our pick, and I’d do it again. Ambergris Caye for the beach (world-class snorkeling at Hol Chan, $50), then inland to the jungle (ATM Cave — the most extraordinary cave tour in the world, $100). It’s the Caribbean plus adventure, at half the price of the fancier islands. English-speaking, easy, magical.

Southeast Asia: Thailand’s islands or Bali ($2,500–3,500): December is dry season — perfect beach weather, calm seas. Koh Lanta or Bali’s east coast (avoid the rainy west). The flights are the expensive part from the US; everything after landing is cheap. Best for 10+ day honeymoons where the flight cost amortizes.

Winter Wonderland: Snow, Fireplaces, Magic

Swiss Alps: Zermatt ($4,000–6,000): the Matterhorn, horse-drawn sleighs, fondue in a mountain hut, and the most romantic ski village on earth (car-free — the silence is part of the magic). You don’t need to ski; the Glacier Paradise views, the village, and the food are the honeymoon. December snow is reliable at altitude.

Iceland ($2,500–3,500): Northern Lights season, ice caves (only accessible November–March), black beaches, geothermal lagoons, and 4 hours of blue-tinted daylight that makes everything look like a dream. The Blue Lagoon is touristy and worth it; the secret lagoons (Vok, Krauma) are better. Rent a car — the freedom transforms the trip.

Kyoto in winter ($3,000–4,500): snow-dusted temples, empty gardens, kaiseki dinners by a private hearth, and the illuminations. Winter is Kyoto’s quietest season — the summer crowds are a memory, and the city feels private. Stay in a ryokan with a private onsen; it’s the most romantic hotel experience in the world.

Christmas Markets: Europe Dressed Up

Vienna, Austria ($2,500–3,500): the Christmas market capital — the Rathaus market with 150 stalls, the Schönbrunn palace market, classical concerts in churches, and sachertorte in 150-year-old cafés. Vienna in December is what Christmas is supposed to feel like. The markets run late November through Christmas.

Prague, Czech Republic ($2,000–2,800): the Old Town Square market under the astronomical clock, trdelník and mulled wine, the Charles Bridge in winter mist. It’s fairy-tale Europe at its most concentrated, and Czech prices keep it affordable. Combine with Vienna (4-hour train) for the ultimate market doubleheader.

Strasbourg, France ($2,500–3,200): the self-proclaimed ‘Capital of Christmas’ — the oldest Christmas market in France (since 1570), the entire old town decorated, Alsatian wine and bredele cookies. It’s less famous than Vienna/Prague internationally, which means fewer crowds and more magic.

Practical December: Booking, Costs, Timing

The Christmas premium is real: December 20–January 2 is the most expensive travel week of the year — flights up 50–100%, hotels full. The hack: honeymoon in early December (1st–18th). You get the decorations, the markets, the winter weather, at 60% of Christmas-week prices. Or go in January — same winter, normal prices.

Book by August for December honeymoons — the good resorts and ryokans sell out. Flights: 4–5 months ahead for the best fares (see flight booking timing). Travel insurance is extra important in winter (weather delays) — get the ‘cancel for any reason’ upgrade if your budget allows.

Packing: winter-sun needs summer clothes + one warm layer for evenings; winter-wonderland needs real winter gear (the packing light system adapts — just swap the fabrics); Christmas markets need warm, waterproof, and comfortable — you’ll walk for hours on cobblestones in the cold.

Honeymoon-Unique December Experiences

Some experiences only exist in December: the Northern Lights (Iceland, northern Norway, Swedish Lapland — December’s long nights are peak viewing season), Christmas markets (Vienna, Prague, Strasbourg — late November through December 23rd), the ice caves of Iceland (only safely accessible November–March), and Kyoto’s winter illuminations (temple gardens lit up against the snow). These aren’t just ‘good in December’ — they’re impossible the rest of the year.

The honeymoon-specific December magic: having the Maldives’ best weather with Christmas dinner on the beach, watching the Northern Lights from a hot tub in Iceland, or walking through falling snow in Vienna with mulled wine. December honeymoons have a built-in romance that summer trips can’t replicate — the season does half the work for you.

Budget December Honeymoons: The Smart Picks

The December value ranking: Belize ($2,000–3,000) and Prague ($2,000–2,800) are the budget champions — full honeymoon magic at half the Maldives price. Early December multiplies the savings: the same Caribbean resort that charges $600/night at Christmas charges $350/night on December 5th. The decorations are up, the weather is identical, and the crowds haven’t arrived.

The January alternative: if your wedding is in December but your budget isn’t Christmas-week-proof, honeymoon in January. Same winter destinations, 30–40% cheaper, no crowds. The Northern Lights are actually better in January (longer nights), the Alps have better snow, and the Caribbean is identical. A delayed honeymoon is a tradition with excellent economics.

What I Would Actually Choose

If I were planning a December honeymoon today with a mid-range budget, I’d pick Belize in early December: the reef is at its calmest, the jungle is green from the tail of rainy season, the Christmas-week crowds haven’t arrived, and $2,500 buys a week that feels like $5,000. The ATM Cave, the snorkeling at Hol Chan, a beach cabana on Ambergris Caye — it’s the most experience per dollar in the December honeymoon world.

For a splurge, it’s Iceland: the Northern Lights are the single most romantic natural phenomenon on earth, and watching them from a geothermal lagoon with your person is a core memory. Go in early December, rent a car, stay in countryside hotels (better aurora viewing than Reykjavik), and budget for the food — Iceland is expensive, but the hot dogs are $5 and legendary.

And for the Christmas-market dream, do the doubleheader: 3 nights in Vienna, 3 nights in Prague, connected by the 4-hour Railjet train through the winter countryside. Two markets, two imperial cities, one train ride that feels like a movie scene. Book the hotels by July — the market-season rooms with views of the squares go first, and they’re worth the premium.

Whichever December you choose — sun, snow, or Christmas lights — the honeymoon rule still applies: protect one unscheduled day for doing nothing together. The best honeymoon memories are rarely the excursions; they’re the slow mornings, the long dinners, and the moments the itinerary didn’t plan.

Where is the best place to honeymoon in December?

For winter sun: Maldives, Caribbean (St. Lucia, Barbados), or Belize. For snow romance: Swiss Alps, Iceland (Northern Lights), or Kyoto. For Christmas magic: Vienna, Prague, or Strasbourg. Pick your December personality — they’re completely different trips.

Is December a good month for a honeymoon?

Excellent, with planning. Early December (1st–18th) has Christmas decorations, winter weather, and 40% lower prices than Christmas week. Avoid December 20–January 2 unless budget is no object — it’s the priciest week of the year.

How much does a December honeymoon cost?

$2,500–4,000 for Caribbean/Mexico/Central Europe; $4,000–7,000 for Maldives, Swiss Alps, or Japan. Early December saves 30–40% vs. Christmas week. Book by August — December honeymoon spots sell out.

What should we pack for a December honeymoon?

Winter sun: summer clothes + one warm evening layer. Winter wonderland: real winter gear (base layers, insulated jacket, waterproof boots). Christmas markets: warm, waterproof, comfortable walking gear. The destination determines everything — there’s no universal December packing list.

Can we do a beach honeymoon in December?

Absolutely — it’s peak beach season in the Caribbean, Maldives, and Southeast Asia (dry season, calm seas, perfect temperatures). The beaches are at their best; the prices are at their highest. Early December is the value window.
